Just picked up a '74 Mercury 50 HP Thunderbolt. Owner did not have the manual, so here I am looking for your help.

I was looking at this...http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/agm.aspx

Now I'm not quite sure which brand will work better for this older outboard. I've heard that some of the new stuff might not work so well with the older motors, but that's another story.

What's your recommedations for this outboard? Thanks!

Re: '74 Gear Lube

I am using that in my 1975 850 and works great, I also used it in a 1960 700 and left it in for 3 years, again I had no problems. If you are not sure you can use Quicksilver lube from a dealer.
I also use Amsoil in the engine at 75-1, less smoke and better performance.
