Model 25R74M just bought on a very old pontoon. Starts and runs well, although underpowered for a 24 foot pontoon.
Reverse, it never comes out of gear. Forward, anything half throttle or more will kick in and out of gear, the more power the more often it kicks in and out. Disconnected the shift linkage since the shift cable was stretched, but even when manually pushing the shift lever on the motor into forward, same thing happens. Drained the lower unit, gear lube still clear with no shavings.
Searched the forum and read....sounds like dog clutch, but also noted that mention was made about the shift linkage being adjustable besides adjusting the cable at the shift lever on the motor. Anyone out there be able to give me some direction where this adjustment is located? Would obviously like to try that before throwing parts at it.
Also, it is a pull start....flywheel has teeth....did some of the 74 25s come with a starter? Thinking of hanging one on it.
Many thanks to all in advance for any responses.
