74 Johnson 50 loses performance when hood goes on

my motor seems to lose performance and wont even idle when I put the engine cover on....runs great with it off.........any ideas?

Sounds like exhaust gases leaking into cover space. Check adapter and cylinder head gaskets.

Are you running it in a tank?? If you are, get it out of there and put it on a boat, where it was designed to run. They breathe their own exhaust when running in a tank with the hood on.
