I have a 1974 Johnson 85hp Model# 85ESL74B. Now I seem not to be able to get cylinders 1&3 to fire (mainly not at all, but sometimes they do spark once or twice). 2&4 spark just fine, but 1&3 do not. I have fiddled with it but really cant figure it out. Any suggestions?

The spark test must be taken with the sprark plugs removed.

The engine must crank over at least 300 rpms in order to energize the ignition.

If you still have the spark plugs installed, remove them. If the engine cranks slowly, find out why and correct that problem first (loose cables, tight but dirty cable connections, faulty starter, whatever).
