My 1150 stopped putting out a strong pee stream and I want to do the water pump service. I think that I should be able to find all the instructions necessary on iboats (THANKS!) and in my manuals, but may be short of time to get this done this week.

Assuming that I have no experience with outboards, but am comfortable pulling/rebuilding auto engines and consider myself at least an average shade-tree mechanic - how long do you suppose it might take me to do the water pump?

What is a fair price if I take it to a boat shop?

When building a list of the parts to buy, I would like to replace or attend to anything related while I have things apart (i.e., spend an extra hour now to save 6 hours later).

I see "water pump repair kits: 18-3314 Complete Pump Housing Kit" and "upper housing repair kit: 18-3507 Upper Pump Housing Kit). Which or both do I need?

Thanks!

Flat rate for a fresh water engine is one hour plus parts and most shops won't use anyones parts but the parts they furnish due to profit and warrenty issues

If your "handy" and nothing is "stuck" you will have it done in an hour or less 8)
I put my engine in rev and trim her rite up, remove all the bolts and don't forget the bolt under the annode/trim tab! And then the lower end drops rite off :) The pump is under the black housing on the drive shaft, note the direction of the vanes and use some dish soap to help get the new impellar in... use a good marine grease on the drive shaft and bolts when you put her back togeather.

You want the complete water pump repair kit. This should include impeller and other components.

Jon is correct on greasing the shaft, but don't over do it as it will be more difficult to mesh the splines and push the shaft home. Do not put grease on the end of the shaft. Add grease to the shift spline as well.
One hour is about right with four hands.

To make reinstallation easier, get the lower unit up and about 2 inches from shift spline connection. Have a second person ready with a rope and tie around the upper and lower unit. This allows everyone to rest while lining up the water tube, shift shaft, etc. Once the unit is slid home, start the two center bolts and single front bolt to help support until all can be started. The rope is still there for security.

Good luck.
