I have an 850 that was slipping in reverse last summer. I pulled it apart and now I need to figure out what will be my best way to repair it.
-New gears are crazy expensive. They will cost almost as much as I paid for the boat.
-I thought about getting the faces of the gear machined down square again. My machine shop friend doesn't have the equipment to cut the hardened steel. He looked into it for me and the place that can do it said it would cost $300 to $400 to cut them.
-I have heard about welding them. Does anyone have experience with this? I assume you build the gear faces up with some sort of material and then machine them square again. What do you use that is soft enough to machine, yet strong enough not to break off right away? Would doing this last very long?
