Hi,
This might sound like an stoooopid question, so please excuse my ignorance. I have a 1975 40hp Johnson that came on a boat I just bought. The model number is 40EL75C It is the electric start model with choke switch and I have forward controls for throttle and gear change. I want to replace the key start, choke switch and the throttle gear controls with new better looking aftermarket units.

Can this be done ?
Can I replace everything with aftermarket units ?
Will I also have to replace the cables ?
Can I replace the cables if I choose to ?

I've had a search through the forums and haven't been able to find anything that answers this for me for sure, so your help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Darren.

Re: '75 40hp Johnson start/choke & shift

Hi Darren, welcome to the forum.

Yes, it's possible to replace the controls with after market equippment. However, so far I have not seen after market controls with the key switch mounted in them. You would have to move the key/choke switch to the dash. You may also have to change control cables if the after market does no offer adaptors for their controls. All in all,it could become a hassle. I might add that Johnson/Evenrude controls come in flush mounts that look pretty good. You would still have to put the key in the dash though. Hope we have helped.
