'75 60HP Evenrude Reverse Problem

I have a '75, 15' Thundercraft with a 60hp Evenrude outboard. It has the push button forward/reverse contol and single direction throttle.

My problem is everytime I go to switch it in revers, the engine dies.

I am throttling back to Idle speed before I try to change, but it still dies. I have no issues running in FWD at any speed.

Any thoughts?

your idle might be set too low, the increased back pressure from moving in reverse maybe the cause

I agree, set the idle up a bit. Reverse puts more back pressure on the exhaust, and it also requires a bit of hydraulic pressure to engage the reverse gear. Speaking of that, do you have the correct oil in it? Too-heavy oil might be part of the problem.

Not really sure, its a friends boat and we use it a lot for towing the little children on tubes and what not.

I talked to him about it, and he said it doen't die... that has only happened a few times. Rather he siad it really won't engage. Like putting a car in reverse and not getting it in all the way and hearing a bit of grinding, but getting some movement.

as F_R said check to see if he is using the correct fluid, probally should just change it since its getting to be that time of the year. the hydro-electric shift models need type "C" lower unit lube. once that is changed take her out and check the shifting again ( a great excuse to get out on the water ). If it's still grinding then probally needs a clutch dog
