75 6hp Johnson won't run at full speed on a cataraft?

just got a nice little 6 hp, took it out on the lake to have a little fun, had a new carb and new waterpump put in, runs like a champ! discovered it was a little shorter then we needed, and found ourselves sitting on the back of the boat to keep the propeller in the water!! got a drop transom to fix the problem, but now my question is, does anyone have any experience with putting it on a cataraft?? and also was wondering if not having it fully in the water could have effected it? it seemed to be running great, but on the return trip, it just didn't seem to be putting out the power as it did on the trip out...? any help would be great! thanx guys

Ya gotta keep the horizontal plate above the prop under water because that is where it derives it's cooling water. <br /><br />If it overheated it could effect it's quality of performance.

thanks! also would like to know the optimal way to attach the drop transom to a cataraft frame (have a standard transom already), as to how deep the motor needs to go, etc...
