75 850 Timing Issue?

I just had a marina put in a trigger unit on this motor. He called and said it was missing after he installed. There was no miss when the trigger failed. It was running great and just shut off. I got on this forum and was given a dignostic check list and it turned out to be the trigger unit. I had him replace but with the response there was a miss. He said the distributor cap was bad and he would order one. He kept giving me the run around so I went and got my boat. Fired it up and it had a bad miss. Checking the fire order he has 2-3 backwards. Fired it up and it ran much better. Misses at an idle though and doesnt seem to have top end power....not like last year. Could he have the timing off one tooth? Seems like the timing is retarded....it smooths out when accelerating. I had to adjust the idle screw up (which was never re-adjusted either) just to keep the motor running. I have had this boat out 3 times....the first time it ran great...no complaints....second time out the trigger unit went bad......and the third time as I just described above. Would like to try and resolve but he (the mech) is the only one in our area that will touch a 1975 Merc. Not that I want him to so it must be me......HELP! Please!

Yikes, I would stay clear of that mechanic, even if he was the only one around for a hundred miles. Did you bring the cross connected plug wires to his attention, and if so, what did he say?

Your best bet would be to perform a full sync and link procedure. Its very easy to do and is essential to get these motors running right. It verifies proper timing, carb linkage setup and idle mixture setting setup.

There is a post under the FAQ section. Highly recommended.
