I have heard that many opt to disable the oil injection system. I would like the convenience of the VRO and prefer to keep the engine running as originally designed. If I run the injection system as designed, what safeguards (if any) are in place to help avoid catastrophic failure? Or is it just Russian Roulette?

That motor the oil pump is driven off bottom of crankshaft and oil pump failures are pretty rare, that why it only has a oil level alert. You have a better chance that magnet falls off in oil tank than oil pump failing.. The oil pumps that you hear about failing are on V-6 models....

For the record, my 3 cyl was 10 years old when I removed the gear. Have no idea as to the running hours but being land locked and all that I'd say not nearly as much usage as one might have if located adjacent to a body or water, or had a lot of time off to pursue boating. So for the record, I'll just guess.....not very many.

My phenolic (looking) gear showed slight wear marks where it contacted the crank gear, but no way was it damaged. Just marks where two surfaces had obviously touched. Regardless I pulled it and wrote adjacent to my gas filler to "pre-mix".

HTH,
Mark

I have seen some bad ones too but usually from overheat damage or piece of broken skirt wedge in them...

The odds on that pump failing is about the same as getting hit by a bus while wearing dirty underwear.
