Is this normally a solid motor? I bought one but have had nothing but problems. I'm starting to think the guy who sold it to me "pieced" it together. The initial price was right (400.00) but I put another 400.00 into it when a screw got loose under the flywheel and caused damage and I cannot get the carb working correctly.

I have the opportunity to purchase another '75 25hp Evinrude that it does look in better shape. Just asking for opinions. Thanks.

You have $800 in that first engine, how much for the second? The look's of the engine can have nothing to do with it's mechanical condition. At least have the owner start it, and listen to it run.

The basic design dates back to the early 50s.Of course greatly refined.
The 75 is 22 cu in. quite light compared to the 31.8 cube introduced in
77.Carb kits are the same 69 up. also same for 28,30,35,40,50,60,65,70 and 75.Various years.Tell us your carb problem. Most involve being sure all passages and jets are clean.I would say your problems are related to the motors owner history more than a design problem.

Re: '75 evinrude 25HP--Good motor?

He wants 400.00 for the second one and I planned to have him run it for me. I had previous posting about the carb. The float appears to be sticking because gas comes out of the carb opening and it won't start. I took it to a mechanic and he diagnosed that I had the wrong jet. I bought a new one and it ran perfect for about 10 tries (in 2 days). I even let it runs for 5-10 mins. On the second day, after it ran, I left it alone for an hour, then decided I needed to start it and check on something but it wouldn't start. I saw gas coming out of the carb. I tried to start it about a week later, and it still won't start. I'm not positive that it's the carb, but that's what it was before. I'm pretty sure it's getting spark because it backfired this last time. Basically, I frustrated with this one and want to get rid of it! The mechanic asked me to bring it back and he will look at it because he guarantees his work. He's really good and I like working with him.

Thanks!

It sound's like the carb need's cleaning, and a new kit installed. The gas you see running out is from a worn, or dirty inlet needle, and seat controlled by the float. This is all included in a carb kit.

Thanks. I did rebuild it with a kit and replaced the needle and seat. I wonder now if I fouled up the needle by working on the carb so many times. I have the old parts so I may try them. I'll check it out, again.

Okay, think about this, the motor runs but now you see gas coming out of the carb and it won't run. So, you fix the carb and it runs. Why would you waste money on a whole new motor?

Where is the gas coming out? If it's from where the fuel line connects to the carb replace the fuel line. If it's coming out where the carb attaches to the motor, you probably need to replace the gaskets. Or maybe it's the needle and seat mentioned earlier. These are all cheap fixes. One time I rebuilt my carb and it worked fine then a few days later gas was coming out from the back of it where it meets the motor. I just took it apart again, cleaned it again, used the same gaskets and made sure I screwed everything in really tight this time and it worked fine after that.

Try you best to fix it. Do it yourself too. You can learn how to do anything pretty much from this site. You don't need a mechanic.

If you're going to buy motors this old, you're going to need to learn to work on them because their old and stuff is going to happen, but, they're generally easy to fix and well worth it.

I know you're right! I'll keep trying. No use buying another old motor. The gas is coming out of the butterfly on the carb. The mechanic is going to look at it again as soon as I have time to take if over there. He asked me to bring it over because he guarantees his work!

I agree with making sure the needle/seat is clean. If there is crap in the fuel line you may want to replace it all the way back to the filter. Might be that you've cleaned out the carb and it just took a few minutes of running to flush more debris into the bowl and therefore through the needle. Either that or it wasn't put back together correctly. On my engine the float looks almost like it could go in either way and I almost installed it upside down. I can't think of any other way that gas would pour out of the carb unless there was a float/needle/seat issue.

Good luck!
