Not for a long period. A short start up to run a short test shouldn't hurt.

Debatable.

Your OMC will idle better, wear less, and have more power if it runs at the proper operating temperature.

However, Mercs had no thermostat until the mid-1980s. The oldest local (saltwater) mechanic around here says he will pull them from older OMCs, because they figure no one is ever going to pay to periodically change them in an older motor - and it's better than having them stuck closed.

I have to admit I have never heard that before. I have always heard it was not a good ideal to run one without the thermastat. I will say that some of the smaller OMC's did not have a t-stat though. I recently replaced the one in my 59 35 horse and it only cost me about $12.00. They are easy to change or install.

You will not ruin your motor by running w/o a thermostat. It may run too cold, and run poor. But it will not burn pistons, throw rods, seize driveshafts. All the thermostat does is run the engine at the correct temperture.
DHP
