Having replaced the steering cable, I was moving onto the shifter cables. I have a Quicksilver 3000 series, side mount, checking with the engine off it seems okay when I put in it forward gear and increase the throttle. What I did note was that I could not put it in reverse. Does the engine have to be running to put this in reverse gear? I seem to recall I reading something that you cant shift into reverse without the engine running...and that maybe turning the prop while trying to shift into reverse would help.

Yes and if you try to force it it can damage the linkage.....per the manual's comments. The shifter meshing system in the lower unit is different for F and R. R uses a tooth-cog system whereby the tooth (male) is rectangular with straight sides as is the cog (female). This requires both to be aligned before the shift to R can be completed. With the engine idling, the drive shaft is turning the R gear and as you advance the shifter (cog) to R, there will be a time when all lines up and it shifts. Otherwise, you have to have someone rotate the prop as you move the lever and when they align, the shifter will move on into R with the lever moving fully to the rear. Just put slight pressure on the shifter arm and when they align the control will easily move on back.
