Pulled the lower end of this unit yesterday to install a new water pump kit. Noticed that I do not have a face seal around the drive shaft on top of the pump housing. What is the function of this seal and how is it that it wasn't there? I am positive that it did not fall off as I removed the lower end. Of course I am planning to use a new one, I just am perplexed as to why it wasn't there and what problems (if any) that this may have caused the previous owner.

Well the face seal wasn't in my kit and seems to be unavailable online. It wasn't on the engine and it seems now I can't replace it even if I want too. Suggestions/comments welcome. Thanks

That is called a slinger and needs to be on top of the pump..keeps hot exhaust gases out of the water pump....comes in a complete kit if you buy Mercury...

I don't know why...but it did not come what I thought was supposed to bea complete Mercury kit purchased from Crowley Marine. The parts catalog lists the seal as part number 816575, Crowley states the number is superseded by 861415 which is also unavailable. Then I notice yet another number...816575A-2, and yes this is available and includes a face seal and an installation tool. Is this the correct part? I can only assume that I have to order this, since I've run out of options.

Crowley confirms that the "A7" kit I bought does not include the slinger face seal. Based on the parts drawing they confirmed that I need P/N 816575A-2, Face seal with installation tool. A local Merc dealer says they have slingers available, though they didn't confirm the part number. I will pick up today during lunch break.

I am curious to see how this seal is designed to stay on a spinning shaft seated against the housing without getting torn up over time?

My local Merc Dealer had the slinger seal, P/N 816575A-2, so I will install the new pump assy and re-install the lower unit this weekend. Apparently the new seal is "pressed" up against the housing (not into the housing) by the installation tool.

In my recent experience, like you, mine didn't have a "slinger", and never did according to my service manual and observations while taking off the lower end. When I ordered a pump rebuild kit (impeller, gasket, seals), I noticed the slinger in the package. It also came with instruction on how to install the slinger. Ok. I'll deal with that when I do the rebuild I thought. First thing that I noticed was that I had the wrong kit because the gasket was way wrong (although I went to the dealership with my model # and serial #) So back I went and found that the correct kit did not have the slinger. This sounded correct to me because mine never had one. Nor did the service manual explosion diagram show one. There are apparently two different bottom ends for these motors. One requires a slinger and the other one doesn't. Also, the seals were very different from the wrong kit with the slinger compared to the correct kit without. The seals with the slinger were thick rubber bands. The one without were made of very thin Teflon or nylon, exactly what was on my boat originally. I'm the original owner as well so I know that this was factory condition. Bottom line here is make sure that you have the correct kit. I know that I wouldn't be adding parts to my motor that were not there from the factory. I'm sure (in fact I know) that you can install the slinger on your motor. There is room for it. But if it was not there in the first place, as you claim, is it necessary? Will it do damage rather than good? Those are the questions that I'd be asking myself.. Also, all of the parts that I dealt with were OEM.
