This is about a 1981 75HP evinrude. I took it out last week, and only a few minutes after leaving the ramp, the boat was on a plane at about 20+ knots (heavy load) when suddenly the motor quit...not awfull noise no sputtering nothing...just quit. I tried to restart and the motor would idle for 2 seconds then die and finally, i probably flooded it since it would not start anymore. The next day, i tried it home on the muffs and after a few idling and dying, it finally started idling fine. As far as I could hear, the motor seems to start and idle just right but I could be mistaken since last summer I had a blown head gasket and the motor idled, sounded fine to me on muffs but would die on the water. I have not done any on the water test or any check of compression yet. I will try to take it to the water tomorrow....what do you guys think? could it be an electrical problem? or blown gasket or worse? I kind of doubt that it would quit so suddenly and nothing be wrong with it....

I'm far from an outboard mech, but if you have the compression gauge I would check the compression first. If compression checks good, you can probably start checking fuel and electrical issues. If compression is bad, you can pull the sparkplugs and check the plugs for signs of a leaking head gasket as well as the tops of pistons for any damage. I suppose it could also be a lower unit issue, you might change the oil on the LU and see if you have any signs of excessive wear in the gear box (chunks in the oil....)

Hope it turns out to be something minor!

possibly could be power pack heating up and failing.

Re: 75 HP evinrude died at full throttle

So, I took my boat on the water yesterday. Motor started, idled fine, went in gear normally then I ran it at full throttle for about 15 miles...and it ran just fine! No hesitation, no rough idling...it just ran as good as ever.... I was hoping that if it was the power pack overheating or something of this caliber, it would do it in 15 miles....
So now what? Just run it until it dies on me again?
