man I just picked up an older Johnson stinger 75 HP motor. I can't see a tag, but it has the checkered flag on the cowl. When I do research on it, it seems that a LOT of people like these outboards. Was there something special about these engines???

Many were short shaft that were sold to mount on an xs1400, those are somewhat special or at least hard to find. I will be putting an xs1400 back to new this winter. I may make a restore thread on it. It's not gonna be powered by a stinger though...

As Racer posted just a stock motor with cosmetics......The 15" model with nitro gearcase is the hard to find one.

No Title

My 1976 75hp Stinger. Just a basic noisy 70 with cool original graphics I replicated. Pushes my 15' '74 tri hull a little over 30mph.

The 75 had slightly different port timing compared to the 70hp and did have a higher compression cylinder head, resulting in a different torque curve, one that really was suited to a race hull instead of a runabout

Oh no racer, you must be mistaken; ANYTHING named "STINGER" must go really fast or be pointy and hurt really bad! lolol

I beleve the 15" model uses the 2 cylinder gearcase with a hybrid driveshaft.-----Smaller / faster but not very rugged.-----Light load only !!

The checkerboard cowling would date your motor as 1979 or 1980. I've got a 1980 on my 15-foot Starcraft and it is a great match. Does nearly 40mph, and is great on fuel.
