Re: 75 hp

REmove the plugs and either hold or screw a compression guage into the plug hole turn the engine over 3 times one each cyl. 120# would be a nice figure. Ck engine for spark on each cyl. at idle and with a induction meter at speed, if you have spark and compression the problem has got to be fuel, clean the carbs and install a fuel pump kit. IF YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW HOW TO CK. COMPRESSION, I MIGHT SUGGEST A MARINE REPAIR SHOP, the very lest would be to buy a Mercury Marine repair manual for your engine and read it over very well before opening the bonnet.

Re: 75 hp

thanks so much and i am intending to get a manual soon but i broke two bones in my leg and am just now getting around again so... trying to catch up. i'll buy the gauge and try that as well. this motor runs like a monster when its going good and comes out of the hole fast but soon it's ovwer. what if my compression is bad? what then?

Re: 75 hp

Low compression probably means stuck or worn out rings, but if it runs right part of the time it's not rings, it is fuel or spark

Kinda sounds like a fuel problem. If you pump the bulb when it is crapping out, does it pick up more power?
