Hello I have a 75' 70hp Johnson loop charged motor took it on the lake had a mid range shudder it seemed so I cleaned the carbs and synced them agaon, tried again on the lake motor still shuddered then cleaned up when my boat started to plaine out . Took it to a mechanic he said my number 1 cylinder was looking spark then coming back at full speed . Spark had a solid 3/8 air gap real blue arc from the plugs problem is.we cannot diagnose the cause of this issue if its a bad stator or coil?? Also put in new plugs when the.cylinder lost its spark the plug would be a little wet any suggestions? We tested the cylinder by pulling plugs off 2 and 3 cylinder to find it was that cylinder. Any help or suggestions besides new plugs wires??

Re: 75' johnson 70hp loses spark on a cylinder

If you suspect a coil, you might try swapping with one of the other coils and see if the problem follows the coil. There are some testing procedures in the manual to test the coil as well if you have one. If you don't, I would recommend one as it has helped me with a lot of procedures and test specs. I had a spark issue with my '75 70hp...Ended up being a bad power pack. My spark however did not come and go, it had just lost all spark to cyl #2.
