I was wondering if anyone could help us figure out what is going on with our 75 Johnson stinger. We have had the whole thing rebuilt last spring. Well we took it out this past week and everything was just great ran nice and smooth not one problem. Started right up and we were flyin over the lake. Then Sean took it out on Thursday and said they would start up right away but wouldn't run at top speed. When he was idle it sounded great and as soon as they took off nothing.. Anyways we went out again this time I was with him and again same thing, so we called our boat mech. and he said prob. needed a new spark plug, so we ran over to the walmart and picked up 3 new ones and gaped them as the last once were and put them back in. Went back to the lake and started right up and again no speed just putting around. So while we were waiting to load up the boat all of the sudden it went dead and we couldn't turn it on or anything. We are now trying to go through and pin point what may be wrong. One big problem we aren't sure what we are doing. We found this site yesterday and I started reading all of the post that sounded similar to ours and so that is where we are at now. We have spent so much money on this engine it's not even funny. Now is that a normal thing with a Johnson??? So we are kindly asking for any help we can get.
Thank you and can't wait to see what yunz come up with..

Re: 75 johnson stinger troubles

Welcome aboard the board!

OK, when you turn the key to the "Start" position now, what happens? Will it spin over but not start or not spin over?

If nothing happens in the "Start" position, leave the key in the "On" position and try the choke. If it won't spin over and the choke won't work the fuse is probably blown. It's on the port side by the starter solenoid.

If it spins over but won't start let's check spark first. You probably want to check compression while you're at it.

If you have no spark at all, disconnect the red cannon plug - the main plug for the wiring harness. Now jump the starter solenoid and check spark again.

Let's start there, keep us posted.

Good news -- it's a 1980, newer than you thought!

OK, it's not spinning over. Does the choke respond to the switch? If not we need to look at the fuse.

OK, slow down and don't panic. Read everything and follow thru. The fuse is near the starter solenoid on the port side of the powerhead. It'll be a real short 20 amp. You can temporarily use a longer 20 amp for testing.

Re: 75 johnson stinger troubles

I am working on my 1976 75hp stinger with the same problems. I have given it to a mech to figure out. As for the not starting mine was the silinoid. Fifteen dollors and it started right up. I am stumped on the not opening up. My stinger stops at about 2000 rmp if not lower under a load. I will let you know as sonn as I get my boat back what the outcome is. My compression is 122, 125 and 126 and my carbs have been cleaned and new plugs, fresh gas and anything else that everyone has told me.
