75 Johnson Trim tilt

Hi I picked up a boat with a 75 -135 Johnson, the trim tilt still sort of works but it does a couple of bad things.

1) The lift cylinder leaks

2) When it reaches the point where switches from tilt to trim the motor sort of cams over.

The questions I have are is it worth trying to fix the trim tilt or is it a lost cause?

The second question is would the pivot pin or bushing be worn causing it to cam over and how tough would this be to fix?

I am assuming that a CMC or similar is the way to go for trim tilt but do I have something I need to fix even if I go this way?

"sort of cams over" ???? The trim system uses the 2 rams mounted outside the transom bracket. A tilt system uses only one mounted inside the transom bracket. The pivot point for both the system can also be used for the steering cable to pass through. Assuming the steering system utilizes the tilt tube. Does the steering bind as you raise/lower the engine?
Sounds like you have air in the system, you said the system is leaking.
Almost all things are repairable, but at some point it is not worth the cost.

Hi thanks for the response

If I understand it correctly the one cylinder provides the tilt function and the trim cylinder just goes along for the ride only engaging once the motor enters the trim range, So when the motor enters the trim cylinder range the motor seems to cam over sideways which I think is either flex or clearance at the tilt tube. It looks to be 3/16 to 1/4" of movement at the trim pin. This makes me think that as well as an issue with the trim tilt there maybe a problem with the tilt tube? I did actually add fluid and bleed the system without seeing any change.

I bought this motor on a project boat and have already ripped the boat apart so I have no way to check the steering at this time.

So what I am trying to do at the moment is determine if I want to use this motor or if I should move on.

This what a power trim unit for you engine looks like, and how it mounts/fits on the engine

Coming up from motor-down position, both cylinders are active and motion is relatively slower as it goes through the trim range. Once maximum trim is reached, only one cylinder is active to continue lifting it on up through the full tilt range. At the point where the trim / tilt changeover occurs, there is a noticeable change in load on the pump motor. But I don't recall any flopping around or camming as you call it.

Yeah I'm thinking the pivot tube is probably compromised, any thoughts on how tough that is to deal with and would I be able to find parts?

Well I have been prying on the 135 and there is definitely movement at the tilt pin more than I like. Not sure if it is enough to affect how it operates though?

I have another power option but I am not sure what my best choice is. Its a late 70s 85 Johnson which has been in storage since the early 80s it has about 10 hours on it the original wood boat it was on rotted out and was not worth repairing. What would I need to do / check to use it again do you think being stored this long will have done it any harm? It has been stored in an unheated garage since it was pulled off the boat. Any thoughts comments would be appreciated.

Motors with a remote steering hookup are adjusted for no steering resistance, so they turn very easily -- even the bigguns. If you mean the motor is not hooked up to a steering ram, and wants to flop over when you operate the t. and t., that would be understandable. Unless your mount or stand is perfectly level, the motor will move around pretty easily.

Thanks that helps I am thinking the 85 has seen less wear and tear and probably will push an 18 ft StarCraft SS 30 or 35? Lots fast enough on northern lakes with lots of rocks.
