Just looking for some opinions on the comparison between these 2 motors in terms of performance and fuel economy. I currently have the Merc on an early 70s 18 ft. Glastron. I'm thinking about going to look at the 130 HP V-4 that is said to be in GC with no controls for 1250 OBO. It was puled off of a pontoon after about 2 years use "supposedly." I've heard that the 1500 puts out about 135 at the prop, so would the actual HP be about equal? Also, is there a big advantage in terms of technology with the Evinrude being 20 years newer? I love the Merc, but if the v-4 is just that much better, I'd definitely think about it.

Thanks for the replies.

i have a '71 1350 now, prefer the v4's because of noise. you will have to replace controls, and probably patch transom mounting holes.

The Merc. is powerhead rated. It's probably about 105 HP., at the prop.

The 130 is prop rated and is all of 130. The 130 is also a torque monster.

Prop the 130 to turn about 5800 RPM at WOT and you'll have a real performer at half the decibel level of the Merc.

you dont lose 45 h.p. on that 150 inline...At the VERY least, that 150 is probably putting out 120-125 h.p at the prop. these engines should be comparable in power but the inline will be a lot louder.

Back in the early 70's I had a 125 Johnny. I used to run (the other way) every time a red band Merc (125) pulled up next to me. Grin

But like said, Merc was all metal and Johnny had a fiberglas top with foam (as I recall on the foam).....and the Johnny sat low on the transom and some of the sound was blocked by the boat.......and you can fish over the J, the tower is always in your way.........but I love em.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like the Evinrude got away and was sold before I could look at it. The Merc got me to the dance and I'll keep dancing with it.

IMHO the Merc looks way cooler for starters. :D
I think you'd find the power to be quite comparable, though in a light application (light boat / propped light) the ability of the Tower to spool up quickly is well known.

Also the Towers are known for thier ability to handle overrev -usually without flying apart.
