Have a problem with overheating so I am installing a new complete impeller repair kit. I also had a leak so the oil was milky. My question is do these kits have everything to stop the leak or will I have to get additional seals, etc? Also when I removed the stern drive I found a shutter laying there in the exhaust port of the drive unit. From what I have read these shutters are supposed to be located in the exhaust tube near the manifold and I should not have to remove the engine, is this correct? Any hints or help on any of this would be appreciated. I'm new at boat repairs.

If we are talking about the raw water pump generally lovated in front of the engine and has a 2 1/2" / 3" around impellor? depending on what you bought, I can't see that repairing a leak. Unless the outer plate is leaking. The inner peice would not have any thing to do with a leaking problem. It may be a problem with the pump shaft.

As far as having to remove the engine for this type of problem. No, you won't have to. the only thing you may have to look for is the pieces of impellor blocking your water flow. In the future, when an impellor tears up. look for the pieces of it in the system and count the blades so as you can be sure all of it has been removed from the system and will not cause future overheating problems.

no, it's just an impeller replacement kit.

no, first statement in the service manual is remove the drive and engine. so ya can get to the exhust tube and remove it, so that ya can remove the rivots that hold the bracket on that supports the shutter. they're rivoted on. personally, i varied from the service manual here. i R&Red my shutter w/o removal. though i did have the manifold off. i bent the new shutter in the middle to shorten it, inserted in the brackets and then straighted it back up. my way is NOT the recomended way. but so far has worked.

as far as the milkshake. i assume yer talkin the drive lub? ya need to find out what's leaking. might be as simple as a drain screw washer (seal) missing. might be bellows leaking and water entering the ft. seal. might be, might be? ya need to do a pressure test to the drive to fig. where it's leaking at. to replace seals in the drive. ya genearaly need special merc. tools.

ya also need a service manual. ya need #2 and can get it here.

Thanks ziggy, thats about what I wanted to know. I have to take the manifolds off to check them out anyway, I expect they're in pretty bad shape and I have to search for the rest of that shutter also, I only found the rubber part and there may be parts of the bracket somewhere. I don't suppose that any metal parts would wash on out through the prop exhaust.
