I have a 1974 75hp chrysler. When i take it out and start it it wont start. I have to so called primer it. Squirt fuel in all 3 carbs for it to start. Thats gets to be a pain. Carbs been cleaned it aint that. The carb bowls are full of gas. After i spray fuel in the carbs it runs excellent. IT sure does use the fuel though. Thanks for any help

Re: 75hp chrysler hard starting

This engine has electric choke..Is it operating?
Choking the engine performs the same job.
I would suspect compression, except you state that it runs fine once started.
I suspect the linkage to the elctric choke has come loose at the carb....It may be clicking, but not actually operating the butterfly in the carb,to close-off the air at starting.

Re: 75hp chrysler hard starting

Well the choke solnoid was taken off since it quit working and i couldnt find a replacement part. Is there any where that i could get one that u know of. I been manually chokeing it. Its kinda hard to do since the key is in the front and the motor is in the back. So i tie the rod down but if i look again the choke butterflys may not be closed all the way.

Thanks for the advice

Until you get your choke fixed Im afraid that you are going to continue to have this problem. If you get that fixed and it does not work, my manual has some troubleshooting ideas, such as:

1. Defective plugs
2. Spark Plug gap set to wide
3. Improper spark timing

Here is a link that will have your choke part.

Chrysler Parts

I have a clymers book on it. i checked all those things. I didnt think that if the choke butterflys were open enough to slide a peice of paper under wouldnt make a differnce but i guess it does.

choke solinoid can be found used at www.tcoutboard.com E-mail to order.
You should do/have a compression test as well.

I have a mid 70s Johnson 115 and had same problem until I adjusted choke plates to close completely, and I mean SHUT, not even paper can get trough
I was going around with gas mix spray bottle and doing same thing you did, everybody at landing was looking funny at me.....not anymore.

I couldn't believe myself neither that 1/64" can make that difference, but it did.

Have you thought about the fuel pump. That diaphragm could a problem. I took mine apart and it was shot. The kits are cheap at NAPA.

Re: 75hp chrysler hard starting

Scotlany, if it ran bad once cranked, I'd agree, fuel pump or compression too low to operate the fuel pump. But Christhefish states that "After i spray fuel in the carbs it runs excellent".

That little sentance rules-out those other more common causes.

Re: 75hp chrysler hard starting

I am french so sorry for my english
I have a force 90 hp who got the same type of problem Difficulties to start but ok when i did it one time At the end i needed to add some special petrol directly in the carbs but in fact the bottom line was 2 bad pistons on 3 ( with 0 compression) How to explain that appended (because the chambers were striped)? In fact a mechanic man adjusted my idle state by screwing a screw calibrated in the factory and the processus of getting the electric spark fire was not synchronise correctly with the gas delivered at this time so the pistons were damaged and their particules sprided the chambers of the pistons/cylinders I hope you have understood !!!!
So now i need to rebuild the powerhead : oversize pistons + ingrease the size of the cambers
Thanks trying to understand me

Re: 75hp chrysler hard starting

It aint the fuel pump diapgram. The bowls are full When i primer the line. and it runs for about 2hrs wide open. I dont think the bowls full wouldnt run that long. Thanks for the suggestion though. I found a site that has a choke soloid for 25.00 Ill try it and see what happens.

Re: 75hp chrysler hard starting

I've got a choke solenoid I got off ebay I don't need. It's for a 55hp single carb though.

fish...been following this and concur that if you don't have the choke on this thang it will not start without priming...if you need a choke solenoid, I have a couple of used ones that are good...and the rest of the choke linkage if you need them...just a Thought
