1976 johnson 135hp , changed out the cracked lower unit for a used one and installed a new impeller lit,w/ plate, key etc , i ran it on muffs and got nothing from the pee holes in the midsection i then filled up a big bucket full of water and ran it in that saw it spit a little out the pee holes. i removed the lower unit again(again!!!!) and put the muffs on the removed lower and i do get water comeing up out of the impeller housing, also blew air up the right side tube with the hose undone to the head and it does blow through. i know the pump is turning. why will it not push water out the pee holes? am i not letting it run long enough letting it run about long enough to walk from the key to the motor check it and walk back to shut it off. i'm pretty tired of taking this thing apart at least it only takes me about 15 mins to remove the lower now

That's all your going to get, low rpm and a bucket = spit. They are exhaust relief holes, not telltales, put in in the lake and run it, lots of water once it's in the lake.

If it weren't pumping, it would have overheated and alarmed or locked up, I think you are ok.

Paranoia is better than asking the wife if you can remortgage the house to buy a new motor :D

Those engines don't normally have a lot of water coming out of them at idle. They are exhaust relief ports which aid the engine to idle when it is sitting deep in the water. If you hold your hand back there when you first start the engine cold, you will see small water droplets form on your hand after about a minute. The droplets will form when the thermostat opens. That's a good sign and about the only sign.
