Changing the water pump .It has been 4 years ,so be safe and not sorry. Q have any of you done this on the bigger Johnson or Evinrudes?? The seam where you take it off the upper housing there is no gasket on the gear case and seem there never was one. Perhaps the leak is a natural thing. I will post some current photos after spring cleanup, now that I sold my 16 SS i have time to do this. Oh this motor runs sweet. If it needs a gasket id rather do it now than take it apart again.

I've never worked on the bigger outboards, but I'll add my 3 cents worth. If you are worried about the leak, you could put a real thin layer of automotive silicon sealer on maybe the outer 1/3 or 1/4 of where you bolt it back together at. Also, if you can get your hands on a repair manual for the motor ( seloc, chilton, etc., there ar 4 or 5 different types I think) they explain how to fix a lot of problems. The last I got was around $30. You can get them in boat shops, or on line. Even here.

I've worked on mercs and this current 90 JonnyRude. Never seen a gasket at that connection.

On my 6 hp trolling motor (sorry I can't get pics of it now), I have a little weep hole under the cavitation plate. When I overfill the lower unit, or the shifter O ring goes out, I get a little oil draining out there, could that be your problem?

There isnt a gasket between the LU and the leg. If running it on a hose its normal to see water coming from the seam. Atleast thats what the OMC dealer told me when I asked the same question.

All is good replaced the pump impeller. and found a gasket that was not on the moter from the top of the watepump to the access hole in the upper unit. . Havent ran yet but should be ok. That darn shifter rod can be bothersome to get back together. Thanks guys for your advise. Pugetsound

nice to see you got that worked out. Reconnecting the shifter rod is the worst part of the whole project. I had to remove the plastic intake and fuel pump just to reconnect the shift rod on my 70.
