Have 1976 35hp elec start evinrude. Had bad vacuum lines, rebuilt carb, changed crank seal, new ignition coils, and now have very little if any spark on number 2 cylinder. Could the drive coil be bad? Going to put one in Wednesday unless you all think otherwise.

Hi Fireman

Try to swap the coilfeed wires and see which now has a weak spark. Of coarse it wount start that way, but: If problem stays at coil, its coil, if problem follows feed wire, its charging coil, point, consenser, at weak plug. All under flywheel, get a puller and look. Suppose you have tried swapping plugs already.

already swapped those wires. That is how I know that it is not the ignition coils. It wouldn't be the charging coil as you say because that is just for the alternator isn't it? The charging coil has five pickups on it doesn't it? The drive coil only has two.

is the previous guess right? The manual says that the 2 pickup coil is the drive coil. Is this the one you mean?

Hi you are right - there is only one drive coil.

When it deliveres spark to one ignition coil, it gets ground from the other set of pionts. Try to check that both sets of pionts are ok. Condensers have to be good too, of coarse. Pionts must clouse and give ground without resistance. Clean, adjust opening to 0.020 and check again.

Thanks for the reassurance that I was right. I've been waiting for the tuneup kit and coil to come in at the dealer. Supposed to be in tomorrow and I will change them out then.

Thanks again for everybody's help. Will let you know what happens.

Dagnabbit and shoot the cat! I replace points, condenser, and drive coil. Found a wire loose from an ignition coil and got it stuffed back up good. Used the spark checker and good spark to both plugs. Put it in barrell and fired it up. It coughed, sneexed and died. Have not been able to get it to fire again.

Have good spark. Plugs are wet after cranking. Put fresh plugs in and get backfire. What the heck is going on? Joe Reeves if you see this help me please.

Hi Fireman 757,
I'm not Joe Reeves, but I'll respond anyway. The only thing that I can think of that will cause a backfire is either the plug wires are on the wrong plug, or out of time. You may have sheared a flywheel key. Pull the flywheel back off and check. If the crankshaft or the hole that it fits into in the flywheel arn't clean of all rust and torqued down properly it's very easy to do.

Thanks for the prompt reply. The only reason that I mentioned Joe is that he is 30 plus years with OMC and I have only been working on them for about 15. Not factory trained. Just back yard trained. The flywheel had spun a month ago and I bought a new key and retorqued it to the specs. I had a place in Connecticut send me a used flywheel and he sent me a 4 magnet and there was a six magnet on there. the manual doesn't show a six magnet but we had it running before and when the high speed jet would kick in it would kick up for a second and then drop back down. Ever since I rekeyed this flywheel we have had additional trouble. I can now get it to backfire with new plugs. I have tried switching the coil wires but then it does nothing so I'm assuming that they are correct. The exhaust on the backfire is white and not blue. When the starter turns the engine over I get blue until it backfires then white. All fresh gas, rebuilt carb, new ignition coils, new drive coil, new points and condenser. I'm stuck and my dealer who has 46 years in this is stuck also. He has been letting me use his shop, equipment, and pick his brain. I wonder if somehow there is water getting in the cylinder. Had the exhaust side off to check for blockage and the opposite side for whatever reason but put all new gaskets in and sealed.
It's funny since I discovered this site last week three people have sent me thank you's because my suggestion fixed their engines but I can't seem to fix mine. Doctor heal thyself!!!

Re: 76 35hp Evinrude no spark to #2

Got new plugs. The old ones must have been washed. Reset the carb. checked ignition coil wires and turned the key. YES!!!! Runs like a new one. Still has slight cough when you throttle down quickly. Probably needs to be run flat out. Need to wait for the Ohio River to get back down (almost flood stage now).

Thank you GDane and Almost retired for all the help. I know what I'm doing but sometimes am too close to the problem. Know what I mean. Just have to back away and go back to the basics. Thanks again.
I will still be trying to help others. I really like this site.
