'76 70hp 'Rude - Middle carb choke connection

I just rebuilt the carbs, and didn't pay adequate attention when disconnecting the choke actuator stuff. Looking at the starboard side on the center carb, there is the metal selector that one can move to the three positions: up for no choke, middle for automatic and down for choke. There is a wire/spring that hooks over the top of that.

Does that wire/spring go in back of the choke plate arm, or in front of it? I presently have it in back, and the choke seems to work properly. I don't quite see what that wire/spring does.

that's called the "manual override" spring or something like that - I'm not completely sure of its purpose either but it does give you some resistance if you're manually operating the throttle butterflies.

"...in back of...in front of..." - having a hard time visualizing - I'm sure it goes aft of the choke linkage bracket (the one attached at the end of the choke valve shaft) - does that help?
