I am planning on pulling the L/U to replace the water pump, and would like to replace the thermostat at the same time. However, I can't find any information in my manual (Seloc) nor anywhere on the web for the actual replacement parts.....I can't even find an exploded view of where the thermostat goes. Does this motor have one? There is always water coming from teltale, even when the motor is cold, which has me thinking I don't have, nor need a new thermostat. I'm hoping to learn this motor inside and out, and started with the powerhead last year and got it running like a champ. Time to move on to the L/U and get it up to date with maintenance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: '76 75hp Evinrude Thermostat?

Thanks, and I found it. I guess I've been reading too many threads here that state: change the thermostat when servicing the L/U (i.e. impeller, seals, etc.) I guess I just assumed it would be down by the water pump. So, now my question is whether it is needed or not? I'm always pumping water, even with a cold engine, but it runs great. Should I bother, or what is the reason to do it. (It looks a bit buried in the block and I don't want to rip into it just for that unless critical). Thanks much for the assistance, and appologies if it's a newbie question.

The thermostat, just like in your car, controls the temperature of the engine by blocking the flow of cooling water until the proper operating temperature is reached. It then opens to allow cool water in. It will cycle open and closed to maintain temperature. It also has no bearing on the tell tale so just because there is water from the telltale does not mean the engine is staying cool. Therefore, the thermostat is indeed a critical item and should be replaced periodically as they can and do stick (sometimes open, sometimes closed). Do not run without one as overcooling is not good for the engine either.

Thanks. I'm sure the previous owner didn't replace it since he did NO maintenance what so ever. This means it's been over a decade since it was replaced.......Ordering it now. Appreciate the help.
