runs pretty good for about 5 min and then starts acting up a bit - surging a bit and not running clean and head is pretty hot. there isn't a tell tale on the 76 and i just changed the impeller with no change. thought maybe a carb thing but i just put a kit in it. any ideas?

Head pretty hot. Possibly Preignition from overheating.
Try again without the thermostat in.
Ive an 80 model, you could possibly drill in a elbow and put on a telltale

Your block has two water deflectors in it underneath the cyl head. Were they okay and not swelled up ??

Re: 76 evinrude 35hp overheating?

the water deflectors were fine and no blockages in the head, popped off the exhaust too and no blockages. i took out the thermostat and gutted it so only the housing remained and put it back, voila cooling properly again. i should have tested a new thermostat before putting it in i guess. what are the odds. thanks for your help!
