While getting our boat ready for its maiden voyage I was servicing the motor, replaced the lower unit oil, new plugs etc, then removed the prop to check for any old fishing line(yes plenty). I was under the impression you were supposed to grease the shaft upon reassembly but I read in an old service manual and it did not mention grease, but rather OMC gasketing compound???? Not sure what exactly to look for but I swear I thought others told me to use marine grease on the spline....what do you folks use?? Also, the nut was not tight at all, and manual says didly squat about that. Just finger tighten and insert the pin OK?

Re: 76' Evinrude 55hp prop service question

Thanks for the information. Not sure if I can buy this locally but I do see some online places that sell it. I put some marine grade grease on it last night but did not install the prop yet. Still kind of puzzled why the nut was not tighter, or why the manual would specify gasket sealer on the shaft.....of course this book was written many years ago. Do any of you folks tighten the prop nut very much or do you just finger tighten it as this one was??

To install the propellor, coat the propellor shaft splines with Triple guard grease. Place the thrust bushing in the propellor and then slide the assembly on to the propellor shaft. Install the thrust washer on the splines of the propellor shaft. Install and tighten the propellor nut to a torque of 120 in lbs. Install a new cotter pin, or continue to tighten the nut to align the nearest cotter pin hole.
