76 Evinrude 70hp replacement controls

I have a '76 Evinrude 70hp with the Power Pilot controls. The controls appeared to be locked up and will not go into reverse, the engine also will not crank with the key. I read that this is common with the Power Pilot. Are there any other controls (preferably new) that will work with this engine, or do I have to rebuild mine or find a used one? I searched and haven't been able to find a definitive answer.

You MAY find some new old stock ones on ebay.

Any of the controls that have the BIG RED PLUG in the harness will work, up to 1991, I believe.

The controls that are System Check compatible will NOT work without an adapter.

I just plugged my 1989 controls into my 1975 50 HP. No problem.

By the way, your old controls have a clip on the throttle cable (engine end). You will need that clip with the newer style cables.

These will work.

Look at item #140295866838 on ebay.

The newer style control box is much easier to work with. The case is just two halves instead of three. It also has a kill switch and built in (Handle) trim and/or tilt switch.

I figured your opinions were to be respected, being Mods with many posts. Unless, of course, you're actually the seller. I bought it, should be here tomorrow.
