Hi guys I have a 1976 Evinrude and I measure the shaft length at 23" not 20 or 25. Does this sound right? I measured from the transom hanger down to the cavitation plate. I bought this motor over ebay and was told it was a long shaft, now it looks like it falls somewhere in between. I'm confused by this,

Thanks for the help ( in advance )

Ron

Got a model number?Did you measure from the bottom of the hanger or top?If bottom ,looks like you got a ex long shaft. The measurement is never exactly 20" or 25" from the hanger to plate anyway.

Thanks ob. The model number is 25552BS. This will really tick me off if it is a EXLS! Thanks for your help,

Ron

Oh yeah I measured from the point where the hanger sits on the transom.

25552 is a 1975 model 25 hp.My sources can't break down the BS in the model number. No pun intended.Look to see if there is a spacer between the exhaust leg and the lower unit.If so ,measure it and post back with your findings.I'm thinking you got yourself a sail model 25hp.No spacer = 15 inch ,short spacer = 20 inch .

Hi Ron,
It's most likely NOT an XLS, as I don't even think they made a 25-inch version of the 25hp model. A 1975 25hp would have a 5-inch spacer between the exhaust housing and the lower unit housing. Keep in mind that you must measure from the plane of the transom clamp surface to the plane of the cavitation plate, measuring vertically. Also, the actual measurments for shaft length are usually not exactly 15, 20 or 25-inches. It depends on the model, brand, etc... This is to take into account variances in boat hulls and how they measure their own transom heights. Most manufactures of motors err on the long side, making your motor a long-shaft, not an XLS....
- Scott

Re: 76 Evinrude shaft length 23" ???

Well guys there is a short spacer so I gues I have a long shaft. It is hanging on the back of a 20 inch transom Carolina Skiff. The cavitation plate hangs down about 3-4 inches below the bottom of the boat from where I have it trimmed right now (second hole out from the transom). Anyhow to get the bugger to sit right I guess I will have to add a Jack Plate? The boat is throwing up a good rooster tail and spraying water right up the motors bottom and spilling back into the boat so I will have to do something. I wonder if I tilt the motor back one more hole and add a hydrofoil? anyadvice on how to handle this? I'm out of cash right now so I am looking for the least costly altenative. Beleive it or not the boat still planes very nicely.

Thanks for the help,

Ron
