This is the first Evinrude I've owned, just picked it up yesterday. Cleaned it up today, pulled the tank then reinstalled and added new fuel with amsoil. To my surprise it fired right up and ran well. I did find a fast drip of water off the lower cylinder head, fortunately it was only a water line and clamp that wasn't installed properly. Here's my dilema, I,m so used to having a telltale that I don't know what to think about the water flow from the two rear exhaust ports. Seems like there is another set of exhaust ports down near the lower, both upper and lower are pumping warm water. My question, is this enough? Thankful for any insight.

Muffs are fine to test-run motor, but pretty useless for assessing water pump function. Test in a barrel deep enough to cover the pump, or lake test, and check head temps - place finger on heads near plug bases for several seconds - shouldn't being too warm to touch.

Good luck!

Your engine is idling at a fairly high rpm. High rpm's cause high water pump pressure and may will dump excess water out the two exhaust relief ports. That's because the pressure relief valve in the stat housing may be forced open. That's what it looks like, esp on the starboard exhaust relief port. All of that is normal. Best to evaluate it when the engine is on the boat and it's floating in the lake. Rpm's should be much lower (normal.) Start the engine cold. Hold the palm of your hand back by those two exhaust relief ports. After a minute or so, the vernatherm (thermostat) will open. When it does, you will see small water droplets form on the palm of your hand. That's normal and a good sign. There must be thousands of outer exhaust covers in boat junk yards that have the telltale hose barb installed from the factory. (1978 and newer models) Get a used outer exhaust cover and just swap out the one that's currently on the engine. You will need to add the telltale nozzle in the lower cowling.

Thanks guys. emdsapmgr, I did have the idle high as it did sputter at first. I was able to idle it down later and it did have the spray that you speak of. I,m a little confused about the outer exhaust cover. I,ve tried looking at a 78 shematic and i cant figure out the part you were referring to. However, I did find an old thread here on how to install your own telltale on these Erudes. The procedure consisted of drilling and threading the cylinder water jacket and lower cowl. The engine has been sitting for two years, so it may be prudent to just change out the water pump.

Always install a new impeller on a " new to you motor "----Have heard lots of owners say " I just bought it and it overheated on our first trip to the lake "

Ordered my water pump rebuild kit from iboats last night. Barring shipping issues, I should have it assembled this weekend.

323153 is the part number for the outer exhaust cover for a 1978 flatback block. 85 and 115 hp. The original factory diagrams show the bubble back outer cover, but the parts list indicates this is the correct number for a flatback cover. It is item 51 on the 1978 factory parts diagram. It will have a hole already drilled for the nylon hose barb for the telltale. Really, any 1978 and newer outer exhaust cover will fit. If you have a 140 hp model the bubble back outer cover is part # 323319

Thank you for that information! My pump just arrived, time to get to work. Oh, mine is the 85 hp model. Again, thanks.

Got the pump in yesterday, still haven't dunked her in a lake but it's pumping strong on the hose. It was a mess in there due too the large exhaust gasket being pinched allowing exhaust a free path to the water pump cavity. I had some motorcraft rtv left over from another job so i rebuilt the gasket area and left it sit over night. Thanks for the tips.

Didn't know if I should start a new thread or just use this one. I used this motor just about every weekend through July and most of August. Mostly trolling, but pulling a tube as well. The last time I used it was labor day weekend. Made a 12 mile run into Lake Huron, trolled the depths, then made the run back to port. The last few times I used the motor I noticed foamy oil near the exhaust ports located at where the lower meets the upper. I pulled drain plugs before winter set in and it only had grey goup in there. I flushed with clean oil, then left it empty over winter. Flushed it again before filling for memorial day. I have not noticed any leaking yet..Is some leaking normal with an older outboard? And, is there a seal kit available for the gearcase? 1976 evinrude 85693G I can't seem to find a kit, just individual parts in shematics breakdown.
