I have replaced my lower unit on 1976 Johnson 115. I couldn't find the shif rod set height in the service manual...so I called the local shop and he said he would show me in the book if I bought the book from him.

My actual problem...I can set the shifter dead center and I am just missing forward and reverse. I can adjust either way and hit forward or reverse, I just can't get them both at the same time.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Brent

Re: '76 Johnson 115 - Shift rod set height?

brent,

I had recently installed mine, an '86 110 Johnson (same)

the shift-rod height from base to top of the shift rod in neutral was 20 1/8"

Once the foot is installed however, you cannot further adjust the shift-rod height.

your only recourse, is to drop the foot, adjust the shift height, reinstall.

except this time, only tighten 1 or 2 footer bolts while you confirm the shifter functionality to the controls.

put the shifter in neutral, and loosen or tighten the control connector to match where the motor mounted shift-lever is positioned in neutral.

Not sure just what it is for a 76, but the service manual shift rod height on a 77 85/115/140 is 21.411" plus or minus .036". In the factory manual, it is toward the back of section 6, where there is a diagram of the shift rod setup.
