I have a 1976 johnson 135 hp v4 sea horse. what is the manufacturers recommended rpm at full throttle? I want to make sure I use the correct props for pulling my boy on his wakeboard and what to use when we are just cruising and fishing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The manufactor will recommend 5500 max rpm. Most people here, myself included will reccommend 5600 to 5800 rpm at wot. They seem to last longer at higher rpm and are somewhat lugging at 5500.

Thank you crb! Now I need to install a tach. Does anyone know how I could accomplish that on a old 76' johnny 135 ?

If you have the 1976 remote control, its harness is pre-wired with the gray sender tachometer wire which is taped off inside the remote.

You will need tachometer that has a 6P setting on the dial on the rear of the tachometer.

In addition to the gray wire, you normally take a positive and a negative off the ignition switch. (Small black wired M and purple wired AAA on the switch diagram)

Thank you Ezeke. I love iboats! So much knowledge and everyone is so helpfull. Unlike the boat mechanics around here. they hear the words 1976 and they say, "just throw it in the garbage, its too old." Well I dont have $10,000.00 for a new outboard, so iboats is a life saver! THANK YOU!!!

Ezeke, I went to look for a tachometer today. There are no boating equipment shops nearby so I went to the local auto parts stores. I told them I needed a tach with 6p settings and no one knew what I was talking about (not surprised). What does 6p mean so I can explain to salesmen what I need? thank you.

6P is required for the tachometer to work on this two stroke motor. Teleflex, Faria and of course, BRP all have them and you can buy the Teleflex and Faria tachometers here at iboats.

Your engine has 12 poles of which 6 create a pulse on the gray wire, hence 6P.

No auto tach will work, and inboard four stroke tachometers won't work either, but you will find the correct ones at most marine dealerships including West Marine.

Among the best are BRP/Evinrude Tachometers, available through any BRP/Evinrude authorized dealer: http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Find-a-Dealer
