Hello

I have a 76 johnson 25

Checked spark, one of the two plugs fire

Took the flywheel off with a puller

Do i replace the points and condenser first?

Is there a way to check the coils?

intimidating looking under there, whats my first move?

i would have swapped the 2 coils, to see if one was bad, before pulling flywheel.

Now that you have the flywheel off, change out points and condensor, very easy, and gap the points properly. Inspect the coils. If there is any cracking at all, replace them. When you put flywheel back on, TORQUE the flywheel nut with a TORQUE WRENCH to 40 ft/lb. I might be wrong on the torque value, but your repair manual will have it listed.

Re: 76 johnson 25, one of two spark

yeah but the coils are under the flywheel on this model
or i would have

i noticed that at my contacts where the normal wear would show they show a white spot where the contacts touch

almost like they use very very thin metal and there is ceramic underneath so that once it wears down enough a new set must be purchased..

i will be sure to torque the flywheel nut to the proper specifications, that is where so many people go wrong and i couldnt agree with you more that this is an important step.

I do not have a manual for this motor

which is bad on my part

it says gap to .020 on the flywheel

now im to understand that this gap should be where?

just to check..

thanks everyone!!!
