There should be NO wires sticking out of the bottom of any remote control box. Check to see what those wires are attached to within the box, marked terminals of the ignition switch (M, I, C, B, S, whatever?).

one white wire is just connected to a screw...almost like a ground. 2 come from the ignition switch, 2 from the engine

ok...the one white wire connected to the screw is labeled tachometer ground (i have no tach so i assume this is not needed)

the black w violet wire is spliced to a brown wire coming from the motor...is this needed?

the gray wire is coming from the motor also...

the blue wire turns violet and runs from the switch

the red wire is spliced to a violet wire which is connected to the "c" on the ignition switch

See the above diagram provided by Tashasdaddy. The ignition switch terminals are:

M = Magneto (Vertical terminal - Black/Yellow Wire - Kill Circuit)
M = Magneto (Reg terminal - Black Wire - Ground)
C = Choke Solenoid
B = Battery Voltage
A = Accessory (Anything you want 12v to go to)
S = Starter Solenoid

Brown Wire? - TAN wire leads to heat sensor in cylinder head. Should be attached to a Overheat Warning Horn.

Gray Wire - This is the sensor (sender) lead for a tachometer.
