Hi guys,

So quick question, I curently am running a 76 johnson seahorse 55, twin, non com. It has low compression in the lower cyl. I dont want to ruin this motor, as i have looked into bore, and see no visible damage, (boroscope) so.. i have available to buy, a 75 or 76 evinrude 55 hp, tripple with slectric shift.... I dont know much about the evinrude, other than it needs carb overhauls, but has good compression... Is it possible to put this power head on my lower unit.. the evinrude lower unit shows signs of damage, of some sort, and is patched with Bondo! Yess..... so is it possible to place the tripple power head on my lower section??? or is this off the wall??? thanks for the help,

Jeremy.

The 55 triple would be late 60s very early 70s I think 68 - 72 if that. It would be quit the mongrel if you could get it hooked up. You say the bore looks good I think it would be far easier to break the 55 down and see what is going on and rebuild it. What is the compression of the 2 cylinders? anything with in 10% is good.

Ok well if its not a direct bolt on im out... HA HA....

The motor currently is at 160 psi on top lung, and 60 psi on bottom lung. now i should recheck it seeing how it had been sitting when i pulled the numbers and it was washed i do think, but it runs fairly good. just hard idle some times, and hard start hot... but i was pricing parts, cant find aftermarket pistons , factory ones are over 200 each and gaskets were over 100.... I would rather repair it, but at the cost.. im not sure if its worth 500 in repairs..... thats my delema.

Are you going to keep the engine and run it or were you looking to sell it. A new 50 will set you back more than $500.00 even a used one will cost you that or more.

Ultimate goal would be to find a powerhead, but they seem to be hard to come by, so im going to look at a new/used motor tonight, seahorse 40. about the same vintage, i only go "wake speed" so a 40 will be just fine for me.. and as far as selling it?? I may.. depending if i found someone that was interested in it and or wanted it.

Look in the "Top Secret File" at the top of the page, there is a list of salvage yards there, give some of them a call and see if they might be able to help you out with a used powerhead.
