'76 Johnson stator going bad

I replaced my stator on my '76 Johnson a few weeks ago (with a used one) the one that was on there melted down and quit working and now I'm worried that the new/used one is going bad. I see it is oozing. The local mechanic said it will do that because it gets soo hot under the flywheel. If this is true, can/should I try to vent the engine cover to help cool it or should I be looking for another problem?

Thanks, Timmy

That engine is 32 years old. Don't you think if it gets too hot under the flywheel it would have died by now?

Please tell us what engine you have.

Re: '76 Johnson stator going bad

Stators on the 1973 - 1977 series are not usually damaged by engine heat. In fact they run fairly cool because the thermostats are only 105 degrees.

What usually causes the stators to go is described in OMC Service Bulletin #1370.

Thanks for the SB,

That SB is talking about the charging side of the stator. Isn't the 8 small coils the charging side and the two larger coils the ignition side?

The 2 larger ones are the ones oozing...again

Is my thinking on this correct?

Did you check the service bulletin?

Yes but it talks about the charging part of the stator and it is my understanding that the charging part is the small coils. The ones on mine thart are melting is the larger coils for the ignition part.
