76 merc 50 hp short to long shaft conversion

I have a mid seventies 50 hp short shaft merc motor and a spare, tired old '76 merc long shaft lower unit.
Can I use parts from the old long shaft lower unit to make the short shaft motor into a long shaft motor? If it can be done, can anyone tell me what parts need to be changed? Sure would appreciate a response.

Do you have the ENTIRE lower unit from the long shaft, or just the gearfoot? If you have the whole thing (exhaust housing, clamps, gearfoot, etc.), unbolt your good powerhead and stick it on the long lower unit. That would be the easiest way to go about it. Might have to replace a couple gaskets, but that should be it....
Be sure to grease the splines at the top of the driveshaft to prevent the crankshaft splines from rusting out...
- Scott
