Hi all
I've got a 76 85hp on my pontoon boat and was running about 2/3rd throttle down the lake and all of a sudden it just died, when trying to restart I find the engine has locked up. after towing in and loading up I pulled the l/u and try to turn the flywheel and after wiggleing back and forth it rotates so I reassemble and head to the boatramp and start the engine and it runs real good no noise and real smooth after about 15 min. it just locks up again, after bumping the key about 20 times it rotates and starts and runs fine and so on and so on same thing. Am I right in thinking that I must have a bearing stacking and need to overhaul or is there something else that will cause this.

Thanks

What are the compression readings to start?

It is possible that the engine locked due to an overheat. The pistons swell till they lock in the cylinders. Once, cool, the engine will run again. I'd make sure the engine is running normal operating temps.
