I am hoping I am in the right place for this..

My husband and I's 76 sea sprite has some steering issues. The steering wheel has about 2 - 3 inches of side to side freeplay before it will turn the drive (mercruiser i/o 120 hp) and when it does turn the steering wheel pops and creaks but will turn alright. We are away from home right now but I am guessing it is steered by use of a single cable?

Have you ever experienced anything like this and does this sound like an easy fix or is it something that can wait a little bit without being dangerous/unsafe? We don't hear any problems from the back of the boat so we really think it is just localized to the wheel itself. We are over the road truck drivers and want to enjoy the boat on our 6 days off and already got some engine fuel/air issues to deal with so if the steering problem can be dealt with a little later it would be nice but we don't want to do something that could cause problems or be unsafe. Input would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance!!!

Yes, it's a single cable. Probably original too.

If you look under the dash, you will see one of two things. A long rectangular box with the cable coming out (rack and pinion) or, a round device with the cable coming out (rotary type).

I would replace the steering system. They are not that expensive. Less than $150.00.

It's probably OK for the time being but I would put it on your list.
