Hey guys, new to the forum and want to say thanks for all the info. I have a troubling situation and a more or less theoretical question here and looking for everyones 2 cents (or sense!). I just picked up a '77 johnson 115 and bayliner for $600, got her home and took a compression test and here's what I've got 120/120/120/35.......uuugh. Now, here's my theoretical question - I did a leakdown test and its holding next to nothing and can clearly hear it leak through the exhaust. Could this be a head gasket leaking into the water jacket through the exhaust? I've not had a chance to pull the head yet (I've ordered two new gaskets and waiting on them to come in), I know that's the first order with low compression, but am waiting for the replacements before I get into 'er. I've lost more sleep trying to convince myself this is all it is. I can say, as I've had it running on the muffs she sounds good (did a decarb albeit not as thorough as I'd like, but I dont want to run it too long for fear of trickle down problems if its rings), used the high idle lever and she operates great. I know I haven't put a load on her yet and that's a whole different story. Just looking for insight. Thanks.

stop worrying over nothing, pull the head, and either relax and wait for the new gasket, or find that you now have a rebuild to worry about.

Okay, heads off (gasket looked alright). Cyl looks okay, very minor scoring (no more than one above that read 120psi). I'm getting deep creep on the keyboard as we speak, dad would be so proud! I believe I have stuck rings, shot some deep creep in and let it soak, rotated motor by hand and am getting much more resitance than before....I think that's a good sign, before the deep creep I could rotate and almost slowly reach TDC, now it wants to pop into place. Any comments?

Seafoam it, mine jumped from 60 to 85psi with a couple of treatments
and it gets better with time, (it'll probably throw a rod next.):D

If you take the bypass plate off the side of the low pressure cylinder, you should be able to tell if you still have a set of rings on the piston.

doubt deep creep will put that much back as said pull side cover and you will find damage there good motors though ,and not bad to rebuild .if fresh water

Thanks guys, its gonna need rings though. Oh well, at least its Jan not June! I swear I saw on a post somewhere that you could get the piston out from the carb side without pulling the powerhead or was I sleeping when I saw that?

That post you saw was a dream. Unfortunately no where near reality.

Let me clarify, I didn't mean pull the piston out of the carb (kinda like monkeys from you know where), rather gain access to the crank without benching the whole powerhead? If I bench this thing, it'll get totally redone and its just not worth it to me. I'll part it out if that's the case. Just looking for guidance from those of you that have been in the same boat before.

It is not likely to be worth the rebuild which requires pulling the powerhead and a total tear-down of the engine. You will probably want to get to a 1979 or younger with power tilt and trim anyway.

The parts of the motor that you have should help some with the cost.

Shame too, this one has the power TNT. Tempted to bolt 'er up and turn up the radio till she breaks.

I have a 1970 115 I am currently trying to rebuild / get running. It'll sure cost a bit to sort it out but I don't think it is wasted money. It will be wasted if I sold it thereafter, but if I run it on a boat, reconditioning a good oldie is a hell of a lot cheaper (and more satisfying) than buying a new one, in my opinion.

Well, gonna tear it down. Since I have no radio in there, and I've had some time to think about it. I popped off the intake cover and sure enough missing 1/2 of the top ring. Will keep updating status and I'm sure I'll have questions as this will be the first time through this with an outboard. Got the gasket set ordered and getting my garage in shape to accept the explosion of parts soon coming! Thanks all for your input and any advice on this proccess is appreciated:confused:.
