77 25 hp evinrude temp question

on river last sat and boat ran hot and cut off. changed impeller and motor pees fine let run for about 15 minutes and motor seems to run fine. i am able to touch block for a few seconds. i am wondering is there anything else i should look for before taking it back out. also is there a themostat on the motor i should check if so where? thank for any help.

Yes. Your motor has a t-stat. And yes it should be serviced or replaced. The t-stat is located under a cover on the top back of the head. To test the temp of your motor with out a thermometer ( this is the seat of the pants method). Dip water in your hand. Pour it over the head and cylinder area of the motor. If the droplets sizzle and dry fast your motor is too hot, If the droplets just roll around,steam a bit and dry slowly your good to go. I prefer this seat-of pants method over using my bare hands. I like my hands.

if i am able to touch the motor and the water does not sizzle when poured on it would you suggest changing the t-stat and if so how difficult is it I changed the impeller with little trouble

Unless the t-stat is found defective, there is no need to replace it. How ever you will want to remove the t-stat for inspection and testing. Also look for blocking material in the housing. This procedure usually requires a couple of new gaskets.
