77 35hp Johnny Charging System?????

I have a 77 35hp Johnny electric start on my 13ft whaler....I don't seem to be getting any voltage going to my battery....I have the seloc manual but it covers too many models and is hard for me to understand......<br /><br /> Should this outboard be charging?????? If not is there a way to add an alternator????>.....Thanks Warren

Your 35 does have charging capability, but small. With the motor off, key off, check the voltage at the battery. Compare that voltage with the motor running 3500 RPM or so. Voltage with it running that fast should be higher than voltage with motor off.

And remember that it is a small charging system. It takes running the motor a little while above 2000 - 2200 RPM to make a difference in your battery. So if you're drift fishing across your favorite spot and start your motor every 7 or 8 minutes for a 30 second run, the battery will eventually loose it's charge!

Also keep in mind that if your battery is not registering a charge of at least 12.8 volts while running you have a problem, possibly the rectifier is bad, possibly a battery thats too old to hold a charge. How old is the battery?

Thanks for the reply's.....Just bought the new Optima blue top last week. Its charged up but I haven't hooked it up in the boat yet.....<br /><br /> Right now I have a group 27 in the boat and haven't had it go dead on me but could still use any charging I can get.....Have a lot of electronics running on the single battery....<br /><br />35hp outboard: Starting<br />2 fishfinders<br />1 Gps<br />1 Motorguide 12 volt 55lbs thrust trolling motor<br />1 500gph livewell pump<br />1 Nav lights<br />1 1100 Bilge pump<br />1 Portable Vhf via cig lighter plug<br /><br /> Hope it holds up.....

Well check your bat. at the posts with a digital volt meter while at idle and while at WOT and post results, anything between 12.8 to 15.8 volts is normal.

i'd use 2 batteries. 1 for necessaries starter, bilge , nav lights, the other for accessories. spend $35 for a charger and keep them charged. a battery that just sits-----dies,

Can someone please tell me how to check the voltage at WOT????<br /><br /> I tried revving it up a little bit on the muffs and the voltage didn't change....<br /><br /> I have a hard time looking back at my outboard at WOT to see what the reading is on my tiny tach. Maybe i'll just have to get myself a voltmeter to put on the console......<br /><br /> I would take it in to get it checked but i'm a do-it yourselfer....The shops around here charge around $80 an hour to look at your boat......Fixing it is extra and this boat already has me broke.......

Me too, Well as long as your getting good voltage on the muffs (at least 12.8) preferably above 13.0 V its probably charging just fine. You could have someone check it while your running wide open if they feel up to it.
