This is the exhaust by-pass cover. It covers the exhaust ports.

R.Johnson<br />do you know if water can come through there into the head if the gasket is bad?

the reason i ask is in hopes that my head or the cylinder wall is not cracked. I just put a new head gasket in and noticed water seeping out around there now and i'm still getting water in the head.

boatdumb,In short, yes,a leaking exhaust cover gasket can introduce water into the cylinder. If you're confident that the head cover gasket and sealing surface is clean and torqued, and the cylinders are showing good compression, the exhaust cover gasket(s) is a likely source of your problem.
