77 evenrude only wants to run while key ingaged

Outboard will start and run as long as key ingaged with starter stops as soon as you go to run position rzn good last year before winterized any help were to start thanks

And what 1977 Evinrude are we talking about here? My best off-the-wall guess is it isn't "running" on all cylinders but with the starter's help, it appears to be.

Yes it fires up runs only as starter is ingaged

Well, I repeat, maybe it isn't truly running on all cylinders, not producing enough power to keep going on its' own without the starter's help. But we still don't know what motor we are talking about. How many cylinders does it have? How many carburetors? Etc., etc. Could have a fouled carburetor from storage. Could have a spark plug fouled with fogging oil. And more.....

Could be a bad ignition switch, or as F_R states, may only be running on one or two cylinders

rechecking spark agian went to cdi download troubel shooting guides went to do some test started by putiing on spark gap tester on botton spark plug motor started ran for 1 minute stalled then moved up to middle plug did same thin ran 1 min then stalled also went to top same as others then i hooked up all wires to plugs as normal only got it to try to run as long as i holding in start position dies in run position then i tinkered with it unplugged one plug would run a minute then stalled then unplugged 2 spark plug wires motor would run for a minute just missed a little the stalled will run like bout put all 3 on back to just wanting to start holding in start as soon as it kicks over dies any info on were to start with this senario if i explained as best i could basic will start up as long as i disconnect 1 or 2 plug wires for a minute wont do the same with all three hooked hooked up thanks if any info toward right direction

Stop trying to run it this way.----All you are doing is damaging the expensive starter.
