Hi all, my first post but after pricing new motors think I need to sort out what I believe to be simple problems with my existing motor. First off, motor does not start easily & will often cough (timing?). I have adjusted the idle a bit for once it get's started but it often dies also in the transition from neutral to forward or reverse. Additionally, when full throttle is applied, there is a relatively insignifigant response initially and then inexplicably several seconds later, the engine takes off. I do believe that perhaps I had my mixture to rich & may also have had the wrong (temp range) spark plugs in which I have rectified but I still believe I have some adjustments to make. The engine is a 1977 Evinrude 115 HP V4. It is in exceptional shape as the boat over it's life has been used sparingly. I bought it a year ago but have only recently put it into the water the last couple of weekends. Any & all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tom

I didn't seem to elicit a single response to my question. Should I have asked it differently or should I have done some other research first before posting? First time on the forum so I want to make sure I follow protocol. Any input appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like carburator problems from sitting unused. Clean the carbs or try decarbonizing the engine and running some Valvtech or seafoam cleaner through the carb. Getting a manual is quite realistic as it provides tons of information and can assist the fine people on this board with helping you by eliminating some of the smaller items first.

Thanks Kart, I was wondering if it was carb related as well but the thing of it is, I took it to a marina to have them do a complete once over & insure that the boat was in sea-worthy & good working order. I assummed that they had run it & clean the carb as well as some other items. Should I take it back or fix it myself so I know how to do it from now on?

Hi 76PIG,
The carbs are simple, I believe that with a manual you could do the job yourself, and would be very satisifying too.
When you hear an engine cough when adjusting the carbs it usually means that the mixture is too lean

Thanks for the input almost retired. I will take a look at the carbs and give them a good cleaning. Hopefully this will solve my problem. Thanks!
