Inherited this engine after sitting dry for 12 years. Told it ran very well when put up and covered. It starts instantly and runs up fine, even idles but misses and pops on occassion and smokes. Smells very rich. The upper of the two plugs gets very wet. I have not done a compression check. does the fuel pump run off vacuum from the upper cylinder? any help would be appreciated. oh, I have adjusted the mixture down but doesnt change the wetness. 77 evinrude 35, electric. one other thing. exhausts water, but spits very little from the side. is this normal?
Dan

First thing to do is replace the water pump impellor. As old as it is, it's probably dry and brittle and you don't want it coming apart while running and stopping up the water passages in the engine. The fuel pump operates from crankcase pulses and it probably needs rebuilding along with the carburetors.
If you intend on working on the engine yourself, I would recommend a repair manual.

c/6

Hooty

Thanks hooty. the impeller is on order and it wont be leaving the bucket until its in. If the diaphragm on the pump is leaking, can that cause a wet/fueled plug? Smoking?

Hi Alexdad

Congratulations with your motor, a really good, strong and reliable model. I own two of them myselves. Flooding the cylinder that drives the fuel pump is just the sign of a small crack or pinhole in fuel pump diaphrame, caused by aged rubber. As you have only one carb, a carb problem should interfer on both cyls. A bad spark plug could cause the situation too. Try with a new set of plugs. Carb rebuild sets and fuelpump too are pretty cheap for these, try at http://www.theshadconnection.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?page=317, i think its 187042, but surf a bit on the side, there is a reference chart, for pumps too. Good luck.

Hi Again Alexdad

Be sure you have enough water in the barrel if you run it on one, if the pump needs to suck, it will get less water. Normally you will have a light spray from exhaust relief holes and rest thru propeller. Pee hole will give a steady stream, try to clean the little nozzle, sometimes something gets in.
